Wood Plant Stands - Combining Nature With Elegance

Plants are a luxurious addition to any part of your house from the living room to the patio and beyond.  You can decorate with indoor plants that are verdant and healthy, making your rooms come alive.  There's something about plants looking so vigorous and green!  How do you display your plants?  Do you just plan to leave them on the floor?  Wood plant stands are the perfect solution, adding just the right decorative touch.  There is no shortage of choice for the plant stands and you can get them in polished oak or mahogany

Wood plant stands are a very elegant addition to the room; they match the décor of most any room and will blend in beautifully due to their versatility.  Take the time to plan where you will position the stands, the sizes you will need based on the plants you have and the space available, the color that should match existing furniture and the design that will fit the overall aesthetics of the room. Your plants should match the kind of wood stands you buy and the two should compliment each other.

Indoors

Try not to go for very big, clumsy stands that take up too much space; opt instead for elegant, sleek, carved pieces that will fit well into small spaces. It's not always a matter of money, you may have plenty to spend but you need to factor in good taste as well.

You can get cherry wood, table style, square plant stands, simple in design and with a marble top that will be a good protector for the wood. You have to order it online and assembly is very easy.  Get two and place them strategically in your home to complement a work of art or an entranceway.

If you have some space to spare and not in favor of something too tall, you can try the mahogany oriental style folding wood plant stand that opens out to hold your plant.  It is solidly constructed with six legs to keep it steady, all of them beautifully carved.

Wood plant stands can be found ranging from simple wood structures to tiered ones for terraces and gardens, hand crafted stands and made from scratch stands, simple rustic furniture to contemporary classics designed to match any décor.  You get wood plant stands that have a hole in the top for holding the plant pot or you can get flat topped and put the plant on a plant plate and then on the stand.  Trailing plants look good when placed in the receptacle designed in the stand for the pot.  The plant stands come with marble tops and glass tops, though with the glass ones you have to be careful about the weight of the plant you are placing on it.

Outdoors

If you are looking for wood plant stands for the garden you may want to explore plant stands shaped like wheelbarrows, a rather attractive addition to the garden.  Fill the barrow up with flowing pots and place it in a spot that makes a great color statement.  Planter boxes are also available in wood, paint them in bright colors and place them on the patio or in the garden for added color.

Tiered Plant Stands - Bringing Out The Creative Genius In You

For all the plant lovers out there who would like to display plants to the best advantage, you can make your own tiered plant stands very easily.  This is one great display piece for plants of various sizes.  The benefit of tiered stands is you can stagger the holders to display all of the plants to the best advantage. Wood, metal and wrought iron are the popular choices for tiered stands in a variety of designs and shapes.  You can stand out in the crowd by making your own.

Steps to making your own tiered plant stands:

Step 1

First decide on where you want to place the stand.  Once you have decided, you will then need to figure out how tall you want the stand to be and how many plants you want to display on the stand, including how big the pots are.  It is advisable to clearly identify the plants you want to display before starting your project.

Step 2

Next you need to purchase the materials to make the tiered plant stand.  Take a trip down to your local hardware store and stock up on wood, spindles, nails and other hardware items.  The spindles should have threaded shafts and threaded receptacles at either end.  Pine wood is softer and hence recommended, though hardwoods like cherry or walnut are a lot sturdier.

Step 3

Begin with the base, which needs to be strong enough and wide enough to support your tiered plant stand.  Cut a large circle out of the thick wood, the size of the circle will depend on the size of the stand.  Measure and mark a hole in the center of the circle to match the size of the spindle threaded shaft and then drill it.  The depth of the hole should match the length of spindle shaft, once done fit the spindle shaft tightly into the hole.

Step 4

You can picture in your mind's eye the Christmas tree; your tiered plant stand should resemble one.  Now depending on how many rows you plan to make for your plant stand, let us assume 3, your bottom most one should be approximately 8 inches in diameter, the next one 6 inches and the top most one 4 inches.  This is just a hypothetical example; you can choose the exact measurements based on your plant sizes.

Step 5

Now cut out two circles from the wood with small rectangular handles at the end.   The purpose for the handles is to fix them to the long shaft in the center; you will drill a hole in the handle and slip it over the shaft, remember your tiers swing out to display the plants.  The circular pieces should have holes drilled in the center of each.  Screw the long threaded shaft into each plant holder and fix, when done screw a spindle tightly into the top of the threaded shaft, not too tightly though, you have to move the tiers!

Step 6

Complete the rest of the stand and top off with a decorative spindle.  Once you have made the tiered plant stand you can take it apart, stain it and then paint it or finish the wood as you choose.  Let it dry completely, reassemble and set up your plants.

Good luck with your tiered plant stand project!
